English Language Literacy Intensive (ELLI)

Components:

Family classes incorporate the "Mother Goose Asks Why" curriculum developed by the Vermont Center for the Book.
Once a week parents’ classes.
Once a week, children meet with a reading partner.
Oak View Branch Library is next door to supplement all activities.
Children write and illustrate their own children’s book.
Culminating activity of the 10 week session is a family party to share completed projects with teachers, volunteers, and community VIP’s.

"Mother Goose Asks Why" combines children’s books with science concepts. The activities encourage children to explore, question, experiment and, best of all, have fun with their parents. The recommended children’s books are fun and engaging and help build new vocabulary for English language learners.

Target Population: Retained second graders from Oak View Elementary School, and their families. 95% of the students at Oak View are considered English language learners.
