Periodically, one of our CLLS listservs generates a lively discussion about a topic of interest. Many thanks to our own Mickie Potter, who combined the following topics for your reading pleasure:

Intergenerational Transfer of Cognitive Skills: A Two-Way Street for Adults
and Their Children in California Library Literacy Programs

Findings from the FULFILL (Families Utilizing the Library For Improving
Literacy and Learning) Study

Study conducted by
Drs. Barabara McDonald and Patricia A. Scollay
San Diego State Univesity

This study looked at experiences of people whose literacy use and
literacy skills had undergone transition as adults when they decided to
learn to read or to improve their reading in library-based adult and family
literacy programs. The work comes out of a longitudinal interview study in
which adult literacy learners in California public library programs and
their volunteer tutors were interviewed once every year over a three year
period.

Many of you are actively engaged in Easy Voter activities as we move through this month toward the Primary Election on March 2. With this edition of "What's New at the CLLS website," we want to give you an important resource to use – instructional materials for and video-taped vignettes demonstrating a "Making Elections Make Sense" workshop that you can replicate locally.

As part of our recent training week for our 43 new CLLS AmeriCorps members, Susan Clark, Norma Lepe-Shaw, and Sherries Oakmon, of Easy Voter fame, demonstrated this workshop. Posted on the CLLS AmeriCorps website you will find a place to download the workshop outline with step-by-step instructions, as well as 2 minute video vignettes demonstrating sections of the workshop such as "What happens when people don't vote?" and "Voting is as easy as 1-2-3."

Note that these materials will remain on the website, so that even if you are not geared up to use them for the March Primary, you can begin planning your strategy for the November General Election.

While you're at our AmeriCorps website, you'll find other materials that may be of interest to you:

  • A list and map of the library sites participating in our CLLS AmeriCorps Initiative

  • Information about the Initiative's goals

  • A handout prepared for the AmeriCorps members by Paul Heavenridge detailing Adult Literacy and Education Internet Resources that should be useful to you and to your tutors as well.
