CLLS Roles and Goals
Videoconference and Webcast—May 6, 2004
California Library Literacy Services Videoconference
& Webcast
This virtual workshop was provided by ALL Online, an LSTA-funded
project, in response to training needs identified through a recent
online survey of California public library literacy staff.
Listening to Learners: Using Learner's Goals to Shape Literacy
Services
At California Library Literacy Services, we take pride in helping
learners meet their personal goals for improving basic skills,
not solely in helping them increase test scores or grade levels.
Learner-centered literacy instruction supports adult learners
and their families in their major life roles as citizens and/or
community members, workers and family members.
Over time, local library literacy programs have developed some
mechanisms for listening to learners, but statewide, we have been
able to report only statisticshow many learners, how many
tutors. We have been unable to make a collective case for support
by demonstrating specifics about how we change people's lives.
To meet the fields demand for a statewide assessment and
accountability model, the State Library worked with local literacy
staffs to develop the "Roles and Goals" process. Join us in discussing
the benefits of listening to learners, and of shaping their instruction
based on their personal goals. Various approaches to using the
"Roles and Goals" format will be shared, in an effort to help
you use it for the greatest local impact.
Participation in this virtual workshop is appropriate for any
staff member (or tutor) who assesses learners' goals.
