NCLC Regional Meeting
At the Butte County Library in Chico
May 17, 2005
10:30 - 2:00 |
Northern California Literacy Coalition
Minutes of meeting held at the Chico Library
May 17, 2005
Present: Larry Williams (Plumas C.), Mary Wright (Sierra C.), Carey Gross (Butte C.), Kathy Spire(Butte C.), Carol Gicker (Nevada C.), Teri Atton (Nevada C.) Carla Lehn (State Library), Jennifer Rycraft (Del Norte C.) Jackie Clary (Free Agent) Melissa Ramos (Butte C.)
Minutes:
- Welcome and Introductions by Larry W., President.
- State Library Update by Carla Lehn:
*Carla said that as of today there was no budget change for literacy.
*Every program will receive a copy of the new video and cd soon.
*Carla spent time talking about membership in ProLiteracy. The State Library has paid for the past membership for all programs to belong to ProLiteracy. Membership is now up for renewal and they have made an impressive offer. They will discount the membership fee from $150 to $70 per program, and they will give each program a copy of their self-evaluation / self-study tool. Doing a self study is very beneficial, setting standards and practice in your program. Also, every program gets 25% discount when ordering from New Readers Press. (Not everyone knew about the discount). The State Library will buy the membership for another year. We will ask Kathy St. John to come to our next meeting in November to explain the benefits of membership of ProLiteracy.
*Carla attended a meeting at the North State Cooperative and explained how great it was to use the video conferencing. She encouraged us to use this tool for future meetings to bring those from those outlying areas to the table.
*There will be a change on the final report to ask which networking meeting we attend. She found out that there are some program coordinators that don’t know about the networks, and should be included.
*LSTA Grant applications are going through the first review. Applicants won’t hear until June. There were a total of 17 applicants from literacy, 50 total.
*The on-line reporting system shows like programs and your statistics are now compared statewide.
*The statewide meeting will be at the CLA conference on Nov.4. There will be travel money for the Friday night of the Literacy Reception. Literacy has recently become a “section” of CLA, and it is important that we have active people in the position of officers of that section. Being a section, means that literacy is now a regular library service, like children’s service. Carla encourages everyone to become members of CLA to have a voice in the organization. They have the power to lobby. The cost is $40 for individuals. She hoped that we would all try to attend the conference as well. It will be held in Pasadena this year.
- Larry took us into the library to show us the web site. Right now it can be viewed at www.williamslogistics.net/nclc. He has sent it to Paul Heavenridge. He will give it a new web address, and we will all know that when Paul sends us the information.
- There was discussion about elections. Larry announced that he will soon be making a job change, and we will need to elect a new president in October. Larry will review the bylaws and let us know when the correct time for elections is.
- Scholarship Committee: Mary Wright is the only member from the scholarship committee present. She asked that we open it up for discussion to the group. It was decided that scholarships would be for $100, and can only be given once per year. Larry will put this information on our web site. Carla said that the State Library is thinking of having the networks receive money that has been available for yearly FFL meetings, and just have them concurrently with the regular network meetings. We could have break out sessions for FFL groups, and trainings etc. at networking meetings.
- Grant Committee: this is committee is currently vacant. Jackie Clary will look into what types of things NCLC might want. Some discussion about OTAN, what is available through this site. Jackie has a training manual she will share with our group at a later date. Some suggestions were: Jail outreach, staff development, tutor learner conferences, etc.
- Currently we have $3,687 in our account.
- Next meeting will be October 4th or 11th, depending on when Kathy St. John can come.
Respectfully submitted by Mary Wright

NCLC Regional Meeting
August 19th, 2004 |
 |
On August 19th, 2004, the NCLC held the kick-off meeting for the newly reformed coalitio. The meeting was held at the Butte County Library. It was graciously hosted by Carey Gross, the Butte County Literacy Coordinator. The event was a wonderful success, bringing together programs from throughout the region. The next quarterly meeting is scheduled to be held in conjunction with the CLA conference in San Jose later this fall. |
